Review: The Summer I Became A Nerd by Leah Rae Miller

The Summer I Became A Nerd by: Leah Rae Miller

On the outside, seventeen-year-old Madelyne Summers looks like your typical blond cheerleader—perky, popular, and dating the star quarterback. But inside, Maddie spends more time agonizing over what will happen in the next issue of her favorite comic book than planning pep rallies with her squad. That she’s a nerd hiding in a popular girl's body isn’t just unknown, it's anti-known. And she needs to keep it that way.

Summer is the only time Maddie lets her real self out to play, but when she slips up and the adorkable guy behind the local comic shop’s counter uncovers her secret, she’s busted. Before she can shake a pom-pom, Maddie’s whisked into Logan’s world of comic conventions, live-action role-playing, and first-person-shooter video games. And she loves it. But the more she denies who she really is, the deeper her lies become…and the more she risks losing Logan forever.
A review copy was given to me by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

If you are looking for a wonderful summertime read, this book is absolutely perfect. I adored absolutely everything about this book, and I’m sure you will too.

Madelyne Summers is an all-American girl. She is very popular in school, has a lot of friends, and is a cheerleader. But deep inside, she is a flat-out major nerd, but she can’t show it to anyone in fear that she’ll be made fun of. Over the summer, she gets to really know Logan and immerse herself in the world of nerd awesomeness. But can she let go of all her insecurities and just be herself before she loses Logan forever?

Maddie was a really great heroine when she was totally being herself. I loved when she was with Logan but didn’t really like when she was pretending to be someone that she is not. I thought it was so great how she has had a crush on Logan for a while when her true self was in hiding. I loved her development throughout the book, starting with a girl who disguised herself to walk into a comic store to a girl who shouts out her feelings for a nerd. In public. It was a great transition, and she ended up who she was on the inside on the outside.

Logan is the most adorkablest guy in the whole planet. I seriously want my own. He’s the epitome of sweetness and cuteness wrapped into one delicious package. He’s on the soccer team but is a total nerd like Maddie. He’s really sure of himself and who he is, and he helps Maddie realize that it’s definitely okay to be a nerd on the outside. But oh my word. I swooned hard over Logan. Logan the good boy for the win!

Dan, Logan’s best friend, is the comedian of this book. He may be hilarious, but he as a freakishly deep side which was really helpful to Maddie. I loved Logan’s family too, especially his mom. Eric, Maddie’s boyfriend, I could have done without. He represented everything that Maddie was on the outside. Superficial. Terra, Maddie’s best friend, was pretty shallow and really annoying at the beginning, but she redeemed herself at the end.

The plot was amazing. I read it in one sitting, which is surprisingly hard in college to find the time. Miller’s writing was pure genius. Maddie’s POV was snarky and funny, and I just got her completely. All her insecurities were my insecurities. All her swooning over adorkable Logan was my swooning over adorkable Logan. Maddie and Logan have the cutest relationship ever. They bond together over their common love of nerdy things, and they have a solid friendship. It blossoms into something way more. They seriously had the cutest moments together. Just read and you’ll see. :)

If you can’t tell by my glowing review, I definitely recommend this book for everyone. I read it just in time for summer, even though I’m already a nerd. Enjoy!

Favorite Swoon-worthy Quote: Despite the heat, a shiver runs across my neck. I turn and lean into him. He plants his lips firmly against mine and wraps his arms around me, pulling me to him. We stay like that for a very long time. I run my hands through his already messy hair. His hands drift up my back, and I don’t care that the itchy fabric of my cheerleader top is scratching my skin even more, because he’s the reason. He’s the reason for a lot of things these days.

Blog Tour: Inhale, Exhale by Sarah M. Ross-Interview and Giveaway

Jillian had a plan: celebrate the end of her first year of college with an amazing summer full of beaches, barbeques, and bonfires. When her mom insists she needs a summer job, and her boyfriend spends more time with his band than with her, Jillian’s plans go down the drain.

Grant had a plan: finish his Masters, get a great job at Google, and get the hell out of Georgia. He might be giving up some of the fun of his youth, but he knows his all work and no play method would be worth it when his dreams come true.

But things never go according to plan.

When temptation brings them together and tragedy tears them apart, Jillian and Grant will be forced to choose: fight for their dreams, or fight for each other.

1- When did you begin writing? Why did you decide to become a writer?

I’ve always been a writer. When I was a little kid, I would make up little plays for my sister and I to perform. I started writing more seriously in college and finished my first full novel in 2011.

2- I LOVED Inhale, Exhale, so I am curious as to what your inspiration was for the book?

Thank you so much! I’m soo glad you enjoyed it J The book is actually very, very loosely inspired by how my best friend met her husband. She came down to visit me last summer and we were talking about how they met, and the story started taking shape. (Of course, I changed a lot of things about their story, but the basic roots were there.)

3- What books or authors have influenced you the most in life?

There have been a lot of amazing authors who have influenced me. I think the ones who have really shaped me were JK Rowling, because she made reading for kids (and adults) cool again. Also Charlaine Harris influenced me because she was the first paranormal romance author I read. And finally, I thing Amanda Hocking was very influential as the first indie author who made it big and helped so many authors realize they could be successful as an indie author.

4-  What was the hardest part in writing Inhale, Exhale?

The hardest part about writing Inhale Exhale was the fact that it was my first contemporary novel. I am comfortable writing paranormal, so writing this novel really stretched me and pushed me out of my comfort zone. I had a lot of times when I would become emotional about the project, but in the end I think the end product was worth it.

5- How do you begin to organize your writing process when you are starting a new project?

When I have an idea for a new story, I do several things. First, I write the idea down! No matter what time of day or where I am, I have to write it down before I forget. I usually try to make an outline of where I want the story to go, but my characters usually end up having minds of their own and I very rarely follow my outline fully.

6- Are any of your character's traits similar to you or to people you know?

Yes!  Like I said, Jillian and Grant’s story based on how my best friend met her husband.  The character of Jessica in my Awaken series is also based off of my own sister, who also had cancer.

7- What advice would you give to inspiring writers?

I would say to inspiring writers to do their homework. There is sooo much to learn about this industry, and you’ll go a lot further with the more that you know up front.

This or That:
1- Peeta or Gale? Peeta
2- Ron or Harry? Neville!  (did you see how hot he turned out?!)
3- Physical book or e-copy? Ebook. I love my Kindle!
4- Pen and paper or computer? Computer
5- Jock or nerd? Nerd!
6- Beach or mountains? BEACH
7- Cookies or brownies? Brownies

Thank you so much for having me today Annie!!

About the Author:
Sarah Ross started her obsession with reading at an early age, getting in trouble for sneaking BabySitter Club and Nancy Drew books into math class in elementary school. She would read any fiction book she could get her hands on. Sarah knew it was an addiction when instead of grounding her from TV or music, her mom would take away her books as punishment (The Horror!). Her love of all things paranormal was inspired by her good friend Laurie, who convinced Sarah that books with vampires, witches, and all things shifter were amazing. After a little reluctance, she gave it a shot with the Sookie Stackhouse books, realized she was right, and the rest was history.

Sarah grew up in Pittsburgh, graduated from The University of Pittsburgh with a degree in English, and taught 8th graders to love reading as much as she does for several years. She will always be a proud member of the Steelers Nation, but couldn’t take the cold and moved her frozen tush to Florida where she now lives with her family and two cats. You will find Sarah now with her trusty Kindle in hand and toes in the sand!
